Melbourne Nocturnal Film Festival (MNFF) is an annual festival celebrating weird and wonderfully offbeat films, created by Australian filmmakers.

In collaboration with Sleepless Footscray, MNFF presents a multi-day festival of film screenings, workshops and special events right in the heart of Footscray, Melbourne!

Submissions for the 2025 event open October 1st 2024.

All Official Selection short films will screen at our multi-day live event.
All short films are in competition.

• BEST SHORT FILM
The award for Best Short Film is judged by our panel and winner is announced on closing night at the end of the festival.

• AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD
Audience Choice Award is voted for by MNFF audiences and winner is announced on closing night at the end of the festival.

All genres welcome! If you have a narrative, documentary or animated short film that is a little off-kilter, we want to see it!

Requirements:
• Under 20 minutes in length.
• Open to all Australian filmmakers.
• Narrative, documentary and animation shorts of any genre accepted.
• Student films accepted.
• You must secure permission from the rights holders of any and all copyrighted and/or trademarked content or materials included within your film.
• No premiere requirements, but premiere status is preferred.
• Preferably, the director or producer of the project will be in attendance at the screening and will be willing to take part in a Q&A if requested.
• The discounted 'Footscray Films' category is open to local filmmakers only. To be eligible, the director or producer of the film must be a resident of Footscray or the immediate surrounding suburbs, and/or the film must have been shot in Footscray or the immediate surrounding suburbs. If you enter this category and do not meet the requirements, you may be disqualified.

Submission fees:
$10 (AUD) Earlybird entry from October 1st - 31st 2024.
$15 (AUD) per entry for 'Footscray Focus' submissions. This category is for local filmmakers only.
$25 (AUD) per entry for short films.

We are committed to promoting filmmaker’s projects on the lead up to the festival. We consider each event an opportunity for networking with other artists and people from the industry.

All Official Selection films receive 2 complementary passes to attend their screening.

    Screening my short film at Nocturnal Film Fest was a real treat. The communication leading up was super clear, this fest is run by filmmakers who really know what they're doing. On the night of our screening, the organisers coloured the space with some moody lighting which added to the whole vibe. You can tell everyone involved is passionate about filmmaking, the whole experience was inspiring
