Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival (BWiFF) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that assembles character-driven independent film programming constructed by bold and innovative storytellers for the purposes of education, entertainment, and thought-provoking discussion.

The annual festival welcomes submissions from filmmakers that utilize story elements in a new and exciting way, presenting character-driven independent cinema that is fueled by the filmmaker’s passion for the art without traditional studio support.

BWiFF will be presenting its 15th festival at the Classic Cinemas Elk Grove XQ, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, from April 27-May 6, 2025. The 2025 Blue Glass Awards presentation will be privately recorded and premiere on Wednesday, May 14 at bwiff.com.

Every year, the festival exhibits over 30 films from around the globe that compete for a variety of awards that range in genre, production, performance, and audience categories. Each film selected for exhibition and competition is screened in one theater over the course of eight days. Judges experience each film for the first time along with the audience. During the festival’s week-long run, filmmakers are encouraged to attend and participate in Q&A’s moderated by a festival judge and any potential filmmaker panels. Each accepted feature filmmaker will receive two (2) festival passes. Each accepted short and music video filmmaker will receive one (1) festival pass.

Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival continues to build a reputation for exhibiting rare and compelling independent films while bridging the gap between the film-goer and the filmmaker.

We had a wonderful time at Blue Whiskey! We were fortunate enough to have our film Fire Department, Inc. sell out our first screening very fast and the folks at Blue Whiskey quickly scheduled another! Coming from the post production, making sure our film is screened in a quality technical way was paramount and Blue Whiskey's venues hit it out of the park! I can't recommend it enough!

Blue Whiskey is terrific! Our film "Breakup Season" played here on a massive screen at the Classic Cinemas Elk Grove to a full audience, along with a selection of shorts that preceded it. The crowd was engaged from start to finish with great questions afterwards. The festival team is so passionate about what they do, and each of them contributes to making this a special event. Just outside of Chicago, it was great to be able to play to our friends and community in the Windy City. One of the things that the festival team takes pride in is their judges see the film for the first time in the movie theater alongside the audience. Our movie was honored to take home some major awards from them and I think allowing judges to see the movie for the first time inside a theater with a real audience makes a huge impact on experiencing a film the way it should be experienced. While we didn't get to meet a ton of filmmakers in person because it's spread out over a week and we only went for 2 nights, I've been able to connect via email with just about any filmmaker I wanted to meet from the lineup. The curated quality is strong across the board, for shorts, narrative features, and documentaries. Lastly, we *loved* their virtual awards show. A week after the festival wrapped, they had an online show and our entire team of producers and actors tuned in and got to share the joy of taking home a few different awards. This is the first festival I've participated in that does such an event. Definitely worth the submission fee!

  • Thank you for a lovely experience at the 2024 Blue Whiskey Independent Film Festival. My thesis film, Cottage Grove, was successfully screened during the dramatic shorts. We appreciate the welcome gifts and the staff intentionally creating a warm and inviting space from entering the theater to sharing about the film during Q&A. Also, Cinema Classic was a beautiful venue. This festival is a gem of the Midwest.

Wonderful setting in Chicago. BWFF folks were so welcoming and true to their mission statement. Will be my first submission on any future projects.

  • This festival is amazing. I highly recommend submitting to it. It is well worth it. They could not have been more welcoming. The communication was very clear. All the films are at a high caliber and the little attention to details are amazing, including playing bits of the scores of films in the lobby. I was not able to attend physically but they went out of their way to include me in the Q&A of my film virtually. This festival is truly about the filmmaker. A huge shout out to Katherine Siegle for everything!!
