Held annually in October, Flip the Script Queer Film Festival celebrates Queer stories from 2SLGBTQIA+ filmmakers all over the globe!

The 7th Annual Flip the Script Queer Film Festival will take place October 1–11, 2026! We will continue to present a hybrid festival with in-person screenings at FilmNorth in the Bill Pohlad Cinema, and extended virtual access through our Virtual Cinema hosted on Eventive.

🚨 If you would like to request a WAIVER CODE, FOR ANY REASON, we are happy to provide one! Please email: matthew@flipthescriptfest.org 🚨

🌈 OUR MISSION
Flip the Script’s mission is to remove barriers to accessing Queer film!

We believe quality representation should be accessible for all and that financial means should never keep filmmakers from submitting their films or audience members from participating in our programming. Providing access to subsidized FREE tickets and waiving submissions fees, for any reason, is the cornerstone of our organization.

💖 WHY WE DO IT
Who and what we see on screen affects our community, the entertainment industry, and even legislation. Too often in film, Queer folks are seen in tragic, powerless situations, or not seen at all. We’re working to flip that narrative by showcasing stories that reflect the Queer community without restrictions.

Our programming is designed to benefit the Queer community, and its allies, with the goal of increasing a sense of belonging and the ability to interact with other members of the Queer community, while decreasing feelings of being isolated, for all Minnesotans.

🚨 ABSOLUTELY NO AI GENERATED PROJECTS ARE ACCEPTED FOR SUBMISSION. 🚨

SHORT FILMS are classified as having a runtime of 30 minutes or less.
FEATURE FILMS are classified as having a runtime of 50–120 minutes in length.

We define “Queer films”, in this context, as projects that include characters, storylines, ideas that subvert the norm of Queer representation, and/or that are directed, produced, or written by at least one member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

All submissions must be in a visual format of 1080p or greater quality, 24fps, 25fps, or 30fps, and be 1-120 minutes in length.

All films must be submitted digitally, via links on Vimeo or Youtube or an attached digital download in MP4, WMV, AVI, Quicktime, or Apple ProRes format.

All films should be in their final form.

Any films that have a significant amount of non-English dialogue must include English subtitles. Closed captions for English language films are encouraged but not required.

Entry fees are not refundable.

You may submit any number of titles; however, a separate entry form, preview copy, and entry fee are required for each title.

If the Festival determines a work is entered in the wrong category and it will be reassigned at the discretion of the Festival.

Filmmakers must have the rights to their films, and through submitting thereby grant the Flip the Script Queer Film Festival the right to screen their film.

All submissions received by July 11, 2026 will be reviewed for Flip the Script Festival’s 2026 programming (October 1-11, 2026).

All applicants will be notified of inclusion or otherwise by August 7, 2026. After receiving a contract for inclusion, all chosen applicants will need to return a signed copy of the contract to Flip the Script Festival by August 14, 2025.

Final copies of accepted films must be received by August 28, 2025, with a daily fee of $5 for copies received after. Films received on, or after, September 11th, 2026 may not be shown due to inadequate time to prepare and test.

What a great festival! I love the team behind it and was honored and happy that they selected my experimental non-fiction short, Augmented. Very sad that I couldn't be there this time. Communication was fluid. Plus the reality of supporting Queer artists? Beyond the beyond.

  • Flip The Script does something that's almost unheard of (in the film festival world)... they offer screening fees! WHAAA? The festival communication was fantastic. The engagement with the community increases every year. This is a great festival that is only going to get better and better each passing year. I highly recommend. :-)
