Lux Freer
Logline: A middle-class, non-binary teen feels like an outcast in their new town of rich jocks and beauty queens, until a wishing well and the most popular guy in town offer a view from the top of the social ladder.
Brief Synopsis:
Lux Freer, a middle-class, non-binary teen (played by non-binary teen Echo Bodell) has recently moved to ritzy Westport, where they have the humiliating after-school job of delivering pizzas. Nothing could be worse than arriving at aspiring prom queen Arabella Astor’s mansion driving a beat-up woodie wagon and wearing a cap emblazoned with pepperonis. Lux’s encounter there with the bully Arabella and her kind-hearted beau Drew sets in motion a plot to upend the social stratosphere at Westport Academy. A mysterious wishing well adds to Lux’s world opening up into a place of possibility rather than a place they never fit in. At the school’s talent show, Lux’s fantasy comes true and even the most macho jock in town learns something about tolerance.
Detailed Synopsis:
Lux Freer, a middle-class, non-binary teen (played by non-binary teen Echo Bodell) has recently moved to ritzy Westport, where they have the humiliating after-school job of delivering pizzas. Nothing could be worse than arriving at aspiring prom queen Arabella Astor’s mansion wearing a cap emblazoned with pepperonis. Especially when Arabella’s ruthless mom Patricia (Jean Louisa Kelly) ejects the social outcast out into the midst of a pool party for rich kids. When well-meaning Drew Fields (Cameron Mann) corrects his girlfriend Arabella, saying Lux goes by “they/them,” the ensuing bullying entertains Drew’s macho friend Cole Phillips (Jamie Martin Mann) and leaves Lux mortified. Drew is irritated, showing a maturity even Mrs. Astor can’t muster. She and her daughter are focused on the prom queen announcement that is just days away. They know Arabella will win.
Lux returns to their modest home and, with their sullen little sister, conjures the powers of their wishing well as suggested by the eccentric former owner. The fair world they wish for seems to become a reality when the science lesson at school the next day focuses on the fallacy of binary sex chromosomes and Drew surprises Lux by complimenting their fantasy prom sketch. The drawing plants a seed and soon teens are gossiping about what Drew has done that will shock Arabella, while she is worried about a secret Drew is keeping. A flashback shows Drew crossing out Prom King and Queen on a ballot and writing in “Prom Icon: Lux Freer.” A bunch of kids have followed his lead, and the class president and uptight PTA president have a spat when the latter tries to mess with the Democratic process.
When Drew complains about Cole dragging him to a talent show where Lux will perform, Drew confides that his dad was a ballet dancer and took his life—maybe because he could never be himself. The class president reveals Lux has won the new “Prom Icon” title. Arabella is outraged but her friends quell her uproar. Lux begins to sing “Monarch” (one of three songs in the film composed and sung by the actor), wowing the audience. Dancers perform the powerful choreography that mimics Lux’s transformation in the story. The kids’ cast join Lux on stage and sing together. In the final shot, we see Lux and their sister gleefully looking down the well at a magical glow.

Cynthia Gibb, Golden Globe nominee for her portrayal of the title role in GYPSY, opposite Bette Midler, has over 60 film and television credits to her name. She also played the title role in the KAREN CARPENTER STORY. With over 40 years professional experience as an actress, singer, and dancer, Cynthia has worked with, learned from, and been influenced by some of the entertainment industry’s greatest talents. Her co-stars include Kennedy Center honorees Dick Van Dyke, Debbie Allen, Bette Midler; Academy-Award winners Shirley Jones, Burt Reynolds; and Tony-Award winner Donna McKechnie. As a regular on the series FAME, Cynthia was directed by Debbie Allen and worked with choreographers Marguerite Derricks, Jamie Rogers, Otis Sallid, and (of course) Debbie Allen. Cynthia worked opposite comedic icons Dabney Coleman and Christopher Lloyd, as well as stars Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and Keanu Reeves. She has been directed by Woody Allen and Oliver Stone (in SALVADOR, opposite James Woods and Jim Belushi). Other industry greats she has worked with include producers Gary Goetzman, Neil Meron, and Craig Zadan (producers of the Academy Awards, Smash, and Chicago) as well as Broadway legends Stephen Sondheim, Jule Styne, and Arthur Laurents. Cynthia is a member of the prestigious Actors' Studio and spent many years studying under Hollywood’s best acting coaches, including Milton Katselas, Caitlin Adams, and Larry Moss.
All of these professional experiences add up to thousands of hours on sets, watching, observing, and absorbing the talents of her co-workers. Cynthia was inspired by the gorilla film-making of SALVADOR, shot in Mexico during the wars in Central America in the 80’s. Oliver Stone made a huge impact by showing her the importance of telling stories about difficult subject matters.
My experiences in the arts over the last four decades have been the motivating factor for moving into storytelling as a director. Jill Johnson Mann’s timely script, “Lux Freer,” portraying a non-binary teen's struggle for acceptance and respect, gave me the gift of a directorial debut that is meaningful, powerful, and may even be life-changing for some of our young actors and even some viewers.
Our lead actor Echo Bodell is non-binary and is someone I have mentored and coached since they were a pre-teen. Parts of the script are inspired by actual scenarios experienced by Echo on their challenging journey to live in a way that is true to themself. Echo is also a songwriter and singer and three songs in the film are their own, including the song they perform, "Monarch." Amazingly our screenwriter did not discover this song until after writing the script, yet the lyrics follow Lux Freer's journey in the film, all the way to "taking back the crown." This film was meant to be.
After the film wrapped, Echo, who is making their screen debut, told us that those were the best two weeks of their life. They stepped into the spotlight timidly on day 1 and strutted out a new person on day 10. That is how I define success. Likewise, several trans teens in our cast found acceptance, like-minded friends, and a new confidence we watched grow from day to day.
Our cast is a blend of professional actors with impressive credits and many making their screen debuts. It is also a blend of the "cool" kids and those who exist on the fringes of the social strata. At the beginning, there were cliches. By the end, we were one big film family. It was life imitating our art, and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.
