We live in a world with so much to see, feel and share and what better way to explore that journey than with film. I am excited to go along with the ride.
My name is Tahlia Govender born to an anti-Apartheid activist father and mother - turned educator and finance specialist respectively - I am the product of two hereditary characteristics: nurture and perseverence. These qualities coupled with the environment in which I grew up have collectively attuned my lens on the world to issues of representation and authenticity in media and society.
Academically, I am a recent graduate with an Honours degree in Film and Television from The University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) and a student of art since I began processing images as a child. Today, my focus of development is in cinematography and directing where I use photography as a guide to the moving image. The works I present are either snapshots of my travels that I feel speaks to an intuitive “moodiness” of the moment, commercial projects or snippets from my films that have had their own focus in the practice of lighting, staging and camera movement.
Not only am I a continuous learner of film and photography, I am also a collaborator and service provider, having shot for and with various people from the musician who needs a new portfolio to industry professionals in Film and TV. I am currently based between South Africa and Sweden, but I am ready to create so long as there is air to breathe.
