Visiting Grandmother
The village of Trúc Ly in the modern province of Quảng Bình was part of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. On the banks of the Nhật Lệ River lies not only this otherwise unremarkable fishing village, but also the Quán Hàu ferry pier. This was used by the Vietnamese People's Army to transport goods, soldiers and weapons to the southern front. Trúc Ly and the surrounding villages were used by the Vietnamese People's Army as transshipment and storage points. They were a constant target for American artillery and bombing raids aimed at disrupting the supply lines of the North Vietnamese.
Returning from abroad, the filmmaker and his mother visit his 95-year-old grandmother in Trúc Ly. Over lunch, they reflect on their family's life during the war.
