Director Statement

"Hell" is a found footage music video edited by Luke Bechtel made for the song of the same name by Carter Ward from the album "window bird," self-released, 2020.

Most of the footage was sourced from Prelinger Archives via archive.org, which is an online repository of home movies, educational films, and other miscellany largely from the 20th century, most of it in the public domain. A handful of choice clips were sourced from YouTube in places where Prelinger Archives didn’t have any relevant options. One brief clip features my father, Craig Bechtel, acting in the short film “3 Legged Dog” directed by Cyrus Khazai, circa 1997.

Alongside the footage of religious ceremonies and slaughterhouses are a handful of shots from baseball games and workplace safety videos – these were included not necessarily out of adherence to the theme but more so to reflect the personal interests of Carter.

Using match cuts between religious ceremonies and images of slaughterhouses, “Hell” is an indictment of organized religion by comparison. Thank you so much for your consideration!

Technical note: this music video is formatted in the 4:3 aspect ratio by design, but if submissions must be in 16:9, I can provide a pillarboxed 16:9 version upon request.
