Music has always been a way to resist, heal, connect and grow. In a more humane and compassionate world, we would give music teaching equal importance as other essential school subjects like math, reading, and sports. In my country, Venezuela, free music education has been taught since the 1970s to vulnerable kids growing in a life of poverty and crime, providing them a lifeline to a future of prosperity and dignity. Considering the rampant systemic oppression of Black people in America as a large contributing factor in Coco's chosen lifestyle, her dreams of becoming a blues music singer burns deep in her heart, and will ultimately give her the strength to leave her pimp and the resilience to complete the healing she will undertake.
