Queer Wave is the only festival in Cyprus focusing on LGBTQIA+ cinema. We are particularly interested in receiving submissions from underrepresented groups, and countries where LGBTQIA+ rights and representation are lacking.

By embracing inclusion and enriching the variety of cultural events in Cyprus locally, Queer Wave aims to amplify new and daring international voices in LGBTQIA+ cinema. We hope to find ways of welcoming international guests in upcoming editions, as our festival begins to grow more sustainably.

Following its first edition online, Queer Wave received international recognition as one of 20 finalists shortlisted for the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Awards, amongst 1000 projects from 43 countries of the Commonwealth. The festival's second edition was delivered in person, and hosted over 40 films and 20 screenings in 10 days, with shorts and features from across six continents.

Our past editions have included Q&As, discussion panels, performances, DJ sets, parallel events, site-specific screenings and retrospectives.

DISCLAIMER

- We believe that having an open call for short- and mid-length films is important, as it gives us better chances of discovering and amplifying new voices in LGBTQIA+ cinema.

- As Queer Wave grows, we may consider opening submissions for feature films as well; for the time-being, the feature films we showcase will mainly be via invitation. In exceptional cases, we may consider feature films from teams that reach out to us directly.

- By 'short film' we mean any work which has a runtime up to 25 minutes.

- By 'mid-length film' we mean any work which has a runtime between 25 and 50 minutes.

- By 'feature film' we mean any work which has a runtime that exceeds 50 minutes.

RULES & REGULATIONS

1. The festival will take place primarily in a physical format. An online selection of films may be made available, but only with prior consent from the rights-holders.

2. The main objective of Queer Wave is to make more LGBTQIA+ cinema accessible to Cypriot audiences island-wide, through a selection of shorts and feature films. The festival aims to address the serious gap in the local market for LGBTQIA+ films, by showcasing a more diverse range of films than is ordinarily seen in Cyprus. The organisers aim to establish the festival as an annual event that will break some long-standing, conservative taboos, and encourage local filmmakers to produce more authentic stories.

3. Cyprus premieres may be considered for an Audience Award. A monetary prize is not guaranteed.

4. Films will be shown in their original language. Where relevant, the festival team will endeavour to provide subtitles in Greek and Turkish, both official languages of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as English subtitles.

5. Queer Wave pledges to support all participating films and their creators by offering a screening fee wherever possible. We encourage representatives of any selected films to request their fee upon notification of their selection if they wish to receive one. If the festival is in a position to offer a fee, this will be agreed on in advance of any screening with the corresponding rights-holder.

6. The person(s) agreeing to their film being shown at the festival take(s) full responsibility for any rights that have not been properly cleared for the above or other related materials, and agree(s) to indemnify Queer Wave should any (legal) dispute arise as a result. Queer Wave will never use these materials commercially.

7. Queer Wave reserves the right to settle any issue not included in these rules and regulations.

8. Film excerpts of no more than 10% of the total duration shall be used for advertising and publicity purposes (online, TV, etc.).

9. Should the festival dates or format change due to unforeseen circumstances, Queer Wave reserves the right to screen selected films at a different time. The festival will only screen a film online with the rights-holder’s prior consent.

10. Films made available to online viewers will only appear online for the extent of time agreed on with each individual rights-holder.

11. In the event of adequate funding and suitable partnerships, Audience and Jury awards may be given out. They are not however guaranteed for our upcoming edition. The implementation of these elements remains subject to the festival team’s discretion.

12. Queer Wave reserves the right to organise the festival programme and proceed to any changes as appropriate.

13. Copyright clearance is the responsibility of the producer for each selected film, pursuant to the provisions of the intellectual rights law.

14. The decision of Queer Wave, as to the interpretation of the rules and regulations, is final.

15. Written consent given during communication with Queer Wave, to participate in the festival, implies the unconditional acceptance of these rules and regulations.

16. Any legal disputes shall only be settled by the Cypriot Court.
